WHAT IS HMO (House in Multiple Occupation)?

HMO stands for House in multiple occupation. Basically HMO means a house which is in multiple occupation. It means a property occupied by more than one household and more than two people. This may include bedsits, shared houses and some self contained flats / apartements / cottages. Landlords may need a licence for renting a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO). They must maintain good housing conditions, otherwise tenants can complain to their local council etc. Your local council will look at few things to decide whether your house is HMO or not e.g
• HMO for the number of tenants
• facilities - kitchen, bathroom and toilets
• landlord - are they fit and proper
• management arrangements
Your local council must be satisfied that you are a suitable person to hold a hmo licence, otherwise they may ask for someone else to hold it.
